Joshua Slocum, Executive Director of the Funeral Consumers Alliance will join us for an engaging presentation on how Aging Life Care Professionals® can better serve their clients by preparing and protecting them about funeral planning options including steps they can take to ensure that final arrangements meet the family/client’s emotional and financial needs.

Webinar Goal:

To provide Aging Life Care Professionals the basic tools they need to help clients comparison shop for price and service in order to avoid confusion and burdensome funeral costs.

Learning Objectives:

  • To determine the typical range of costs associated with funerals, cremations, and burials.
  • To understand the legal rights funeral consumers enjoy, and how clients can use them to protect themselves from overspending or manipulative funeral sales practices.
  • To summarize and pass on to clients, simple tips for comparison-shopping on funeral services and prices, even if they have done no funeral planning before the death.

About the Presenter

Joshua Slocum has served as executive director of Funeral Consumers Alliance since 2003. Prior to joining FCA, he worked as a crime and government reporter for The Lynchburg News and Advance. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Sarah Lawrence College.  Slocum is a nationally known expert on the issues facing grieving families when they arrange funerals. He has appeared on the CBS Morning News, National Public Radio, 60 Minutes, and is frequently quoted in national and local media on matters relating to consumers of funeral services.  In 2011, Slocum co-wrote the consumer manual Final Rights: Reclaiming the American Way of Death (2011:  Upper Access Publishers). The book takes the reader through all the possible facets of arranging funerals, burials, and cremations, relating real-life stories from consumers who faced problems and advising readers on how to avoid them. The book features a chapter on the funeral and burial-related laws in each of the US states, putting legalese into plain English for the lay reader and consumer.
