Adult Protective Services (APS) programs have many differences across states, but also many similarities. This webinar will briefly review some of the common factors among programs and detail the primary differences among them. The presenters will discuss eligibility, administration models, settings investigated, and types of maltreatment that each state investigates. The presenters will also discuss potential changes to the APS landscape as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Webinar Goal:

The goal of this session is to teach what is common and what is different among state APS programs. Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn the differences among APS programs.
  • Participants will learn potential changes to APS systems as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

About the Presenters

Andrew Capehart is a Senior Business Analyst/Subject Matter Expert at WRMA, Inc., a Trimetrix Company. He currently serves as the lead for technical assistance at the Adult Protective Services Technical Assistance Resource Center (APS TARC). Andrew has over 20 years of experience in the vulnerable adult abuse field at the local, state, and national levels.  He has held investigatory, supervisory, and administrative positions in Columbus, Ohio, and Washington, DC and was a staff member at the National Center on Elder Abuse and the National Adult Protective Services Association, where he served as Assistant Director for over six years. He has had numerous appointments to aging related boards and commissions and has chaired both state and national elder abuse conferences. Andrew has worked and consulted with a wide variety of Adult Protective Services programs across the United States.

Karl Urban is a Senior Research Manager with Walter R. McDonald and Associates, Inc. (WRMA) and works with the Adult Protective Services Technical Assistance Resource Center. Before joining WRMA, Mr. Urban had a 25-year career in Texas state government, culminating in serving as a Director and Assistant Commissioner in the Adult Protective Services program.  Prior to APS, Mr. Urban worked on aging and disability issues, including serving as Manager of Policy Analysis and Support at the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, Deputy Director at the Texas Department on Aging and as a member of the Texas Council on Developmental Disabilities, Statewide Health Coordinating Council, and Governor's Advisory Council on Physical Fitness.  Mr. Urban’s experience has also included planning, policy analysis and consulting positions at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Office of the Governor and in the private and non-profit sectors.  He has BA degree in Government from Abilene Christian University and a MA in Public Affairs from the LBJ School at The University of Texas at Austin.

Continuing Education Credit Hours

ALCA has been approved for 1 CE contact hour from CBRN, NACCM, and NYSED, and has applied for approval from NASW and CCMC. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # 15884, for 1 Contact Hour. Aging Life Care Association, SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0166. This event has been approved for 1.0 contact hour. Attendee must attend entire webinar to receive any CE certificates. Attendees requesting a CE Certificate for Social Work (NASW or NYSED) must successfully submit and pass a post-test prior to receiving CE certificate.

Cancellation Policy

The registration fee for webinars is non-refundable. Registrants who are not able to attend the webinar will receive audio & video files following the event. For clinical webinars, CE contact hours will not be available to those who are not able to attend the entire live event.

In the unfortunate event that a webinar needs to be cancelled or rescheduled ALCA will notify the registrant by email and provide information on the new date or alternative arrangements. If the registrant is not able to attend the new date ALCA will refund the registration fee or place a credit towards a future event.
