There are approximately 3 million LGBT older adults in the United States. That number is expected to reach more than 7 million in the next decade. Some are “out of the closet,” some are not. Estimates are that few LGBT older adults are currently being served by Aging Life Care Professionals® despite the fact that many LGBT individuals and their families could benefit from our services.  

ALCA is pleased to offer this event to help members become more engaged and sensitive to the needs of LGBT communities by welcoming LGBT people and their families into their practices. The goal of this webinar is to prepare Aging Life Care Professionals to meet the needs of the large and growing LGBT aging population.  Members who attend this training can position themselves nationally to attract LGBT consumers looking for care for themselves or for their loved ones.

Please join us for a live, one-hour training event to help Aging Life Care Professionals improve on what they do best – offering the best possible care to ALL clients, so that they can age with dignity and respect. Participants will be able to:

• Understand the cultures, needs and concerns of LGBT older adults
• Hear stories of real LGBT older adults – and how their lives have intersected with changes in how society thinks about and treats LGBT people
• Understand health disparities and how other life events impact LGBT older adults
• Take meaningful action steps immediately to improve the quality of supports and services they provide to LGBT older adults

ALCA members who are trained may earn a SAGECare credential, which can be used in all of its marketing materials, websites, platforms, and highlighted on SAGECare’s website (www.sageusa.care) to communicate their investment in LGBT cultural competency and inclusion.

As an added incentive to this Special Webinar Event, agencies who bring together/register 25% of their staff for this ALCA-hosted SAGECare training will be eligible to receive SAGECare’s 2017 Bronze credential.

Continuing Education Credit Hours

ALCA has been approved for 1 CE contact hour from CBRN, NACCM, and NYSED, and has applied for approval from NASW and CCMC.

Aging Life Care Association SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers, #0166. This program approved for 1.0 contact hour.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # 15884, for 1 Contact Hour.

Attendee must attend entire LIVE webinar to receive any CE certificates. Attendees requesting a CE Certificate for Social Work (NASW or NYSED SW) must successfully submit and pass a post-test prior to receiving CE certificate.

About the Presenter

Sadiya Abjani

Training Specialist

Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE)

Sadiya Abjani is the Training Specialist at Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) as well as a queer Muslim activist. She received her Bachelors in Islamic Studies and English from the University of Texas at Austin, where she spent time learning curriculum development and gaining expertise in training development and delivery. Previously, Sadiya worked as the Corporate Training Coordinator at the Equal Rights Center, where she delivered trainings on Fair Housing, Disability Rights, and Sensitivity and Diversity. She has done extensive work within the elder community, including developing and executing a large project surveying the South Asian elder community to isolate signs of depression.
Her goals in life include writing a comic based on her life, convincing the "mainstream" Muslim majority that Islam has a loving place in its heart for its queer believers, and continuing to create spaces where minority communities can process, heal, and self-advocate.
