This session includes an overview of ethics and strategies for working with older adults and their families. Dr. Teaster will also discuss ways to infuse care work with kindness, drawing upon lessons learned while working with older people during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of this session is to draw upon ethics and kindness to provide insight and tools to conduct better care work involving older adults.   Participants will be able to understand the application of ethical principles to situations, learn strategies to infuse kindness into care work involving older adults and use lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic to improve assistance to older adults and their families.

Session 2: Fast-Forward: Changing Lives and Getting the Conversation Started

Fast-Forward Director Michael Eric Hurtig and The Conversation Project’s Senior Director Kate DeBartolo will join us in Orlando for an upbeat conversation on how Aging Life Care Professionals can help clients take a pragmatic look into their families’ futures and help them maximize their choices to help them age more successfully. Intergenerational family dynamics play a key role in this.  While the Fast Forward film director and developers knew that bringing millennials and boomers together to have “the conversation” would be an underlying dynamic of the film, they still needed something to jolt the cast into an exploration of their greatest aging fears and expectations. Using M.I.T.’s immersive A.G.N.E.S. aging suit as a starting point, they brought their futures to life. During this presentation, Michael Eric and Kate will discuss some different family stories/dynamics and techniques to help you broach these critical conversations with your clients.  They will also share resources on how to have a conversation about what matters TO your clients, not what’s the matter with them and inspire you to embark on your own time travel experiment to explore how you can better facilitate conversations on advance care planning with their clients/families in the communities you serve.

Session 3: Achieving and Maintaining a Brain Healthy Lifestyle

Learn the latest brain health recommendations from AARP’s Global Council on Brain Health (GCBH) based on recent research advancements. The GCBH’s 12 reports incorporate the insights of scientists, clinicians, public health scholars, and policy experts from around the world about the evidenced based ways adults can reduce their risks for cognitive decline as they age, potentially delay onset of dementia, and improve the quality of life for those living with dementia. Additionally, AARP conducted two related surveys focused on the perceptions adults 40+ and health care providers have about dementia and cognitive impairment demonstrating that widespread misunderstandings and stigma hinders care.

Session 4: Stress, Seclusion and Substance Use: The COVID Impact on Aging Adults and Their Families

As we embarked on a new normal and feelings of uncertainty grew in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, there was a rise of mental health disorders -- and older adults have been especially impacted due to a higher risk of serious illness, stress, isolation, and anxiety. During our interactive presentation, we will address the psychological and emotional effects that older adults are experiencing while navigating the pandemic and adjusting to a new normal. The goal of the session will be to understand the statistical picture of behavioral health in older adults, recognizing signs and symptoms, addressing complex family dynamics, and navigating the system in our new normal.

Session 5: Crosstalk - A Collaboration of Case Managers & Aging Life Care Professionals

This presentation will focus on what happens when an elder individual becomes an acute care patient. How does an Aging Life Care Professional access the acute care environment and collaborate with the case manager, as they are both focused on “doing the right thing, at the right time, and for the right reason” in supporting the individual and their plan of care. We will discuss the “maze” of health care professionals and facilities; the role case managers and Aging Life Care Managers play within health systems; and provide guidance regarding access and collaboration. This will be a dynamic discussion focusing on patient advocacy.
