Home modifications allow older adults to remain in the home they love even after a recent medical compromise. This webinar will educate Aging Life Care Managers® in a variety of home modifications, specialty products, durable medical equipment, and customized construction projects to promote safe and accessible living environments for their clients. We will review how an Aging Life Care Professional can recognize possible obstacles in the home and facilitate the home modification process to assure an optimal, functional outcome. Many products and home improvement projects will be identified that when implemented will reduce falls, provide access, promote independence, and prevent caregiver injuries. This event will include an in-depth discussion regarding key components and specifications of home modification interventions including stair-lifts, grab-bars, stair-rails, vertical platform lifts, elevating toilet seats, ceiling lift systems, etc... Evidence based practice in the form of real-life examples of outcomes generated by the implementation of modifications will be presented in before and after pictorial format and resources for project funding will be identified.
Webinar Goal:
The goal of this webinar is to expose Aging Life Care Mangers® to the knowledge required to recommend home modifications to assure safe discharges from hospitals/rehab centers as well as keeping clients safe while aging in place.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Identify at least eight home modification and/or Durable Medical Equipment (DME) options a therapist may recommend for patients with home safety and accessibility needs.
- Comprehend and apply knowledge to differentiate between various environmental modifications and DME, to promote safe and accessible environments based on the obstacles within the home and the individual’s functional abilities.
- Identify at least seven new products patients/clients may utilize to reduce level of dependence and caregiver burden when residing in a home environment with physical challenges.
- Appreciate the importance of how home modifications can preserve the safety and well-being of caregivers and patients/clients.
- Identify the steps involved in implementing the home modification process.
About the Presenters
Gregg and Karen Frank are a licensed occupational and physical therapist who live in northern New Jersey and each have over 27 years of rehabilitation experience. Gregg Frank graduated from Boston University in 1989 with a degree in occupational therapy. He holds the position of Home & Community Health Home Modification Network Manager of the American Occupational Therapy Association. He is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist, a designation of the National Association of Home Builders. Gregg is also a licensed Home Improvement Contractor in the state of New Jersey. Karen Frank graduated from Cornell University in 1987. She then received a degree in physical therapy from Simmons College in 1989. Karen and Gregg began their rehabilitation careers together in 1990 and have since worked in Acute Care Hospitals, In-Patient and Out-Patient Rehabilitation Centers, Skilled Nursing Facilities and Assisted Living facilities. Karen also worked as a home care physical therapist. In 2007 Gregg and Karen developed Back Home Safely - a home modification company - to focus on their goal of helping people remain living in their own homes despite all obstacles. Along with their team of staff carpenters, they have dedicated the last 11 years of practice to modifying homes with the goal of assisting individuals in remaining in their own homes despite medical compromise, through the use of home modification. They actively educate occupational therapists, physical therapists, case managers and social workers through presentations on home modifications.
Continuing Education Credit Hours
ALCA has been approved for 1 CE contact hour from CBRN, NACCM, and NYSED, and has applied for approval from NASW and CCMC. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # 15884, for 1 Contact Hour. Aging Life Care Association, SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0166. This event has been approved for 1.0 contact hour. Attendee must attend entire webinar to receive any CE certificates. Attendees requesting a CE Certificate for Social Work (NASW or NYSED) must successfully submit and pass a post-test prior to receiving CE certificate.
Cancellation Policy
The registration fee for webinars is non-refundable. Registrants who are not able to attend the webinar will receive audio & video files following the event. For clinical webinars, CE contact hours will not be available to those who are not able to attend the entire live event.
In the unfortunate event that a webinar needs to be cancelled or rescheduled ALCA will notify the registrant by email and provide information on the new date or alternative arrangements. If the registrant is not able to attend the new date ALCA will refund the registration fee or place a credit towards a future event.
