Competent assessment of decision-making capacity (DMC) is a part of everyday practice for Aging Life Care Professionals. Chances are you have come across complex situations involving capacity and risk. Our practices require that we empower and support an older adult's self-determination while being sensitive, attuned, and ultimately responsive when support and/or protections are necessary to maintain a person's preferences, well-being, and safety.

Goal: This webinar provides guidance on the assessment of decision-making capacity (DMC) with older persons, including how to communicate confidential findings with other professionals to obtain the best outcomes for your client

About the Presenter

Dr. Adria Navarro is a gerontologist (PhD) that aims to optimize practices, interventions, and environmental supports for older persons. She holds a California clinical social work license (LCSW) with more than 30 years serving community-dwelling older persons through positions at hospitals, managed care, inpatient/outpatient psychiatry, and adult day health care.  She has been a university-appointed educator over the past decade, as Associate Professor of Social Work in addition to being principal for Navarro Consulting since 2017. During the pandemic she co-founded the USC Verdugo Hills Hospital-Community Resource Center for Aging. She recently returned to the states, following a US-UK Fulbright Scholarship at the University of York, England, where she focused on learning about their national Mental Capacity Act.

Competent assessment of decision-making capacity (DMC) has been a growing passion for Dr. Navarro. She describes DMC as an elder justice issue, "Our work is to promote an older adult's self-determination while being responsive when support and/or protections are necessary to maintain that person's preferences, well-being, and safety."  She founded and chairs the NASW CA Council on Aging, remains active with several other professional organizations, as well as serving on three boards of directors.
