Alcohol and opioid addiction with chronic pain among older adults threatens life and quality of life. How the solutions may become the problem is explored in a biopsychosocial, context. Dimensional, nonopioid treatment is the future of humane and authentic recovery. Dr. Dyben will present new insight and share effective tools to help Aging Life Care Professionals® evaluate the presence of opioid/alcohol addiction, and support addiction recovery and humane pain management for holistic, meaningful life with healthy function for older adults.
The overall session goal is to present new insight and effective tools in aging care practice, in order for ALC Professionals to evaluate the presence of opioid/alcohol addiction, and support addiction recovery and humane pain management for holistic, meaningful life with healthy function for older adults.
Learning Objectives: Upon conclusion of this event, participants will be able to:
- Explain challenges of older adult opioid and alcohol addiction in the context of ethical, dimensional treatment that effectively and humanely treats chronic pain and substance use disorder.
- Relate how the patient’s relationship with pain impacts the sensations of pain and quality of life, and how opioids for pain are ineffective over time in all dimensions
- Describe the generational, relational, and co-morbidity aspects of older adult opioid and alcohol addiction, and effective interventions and collaborative long-term solutions.
About the Presenter:
Dr. John Dyben leads the pioneering clinical development of Boomer and older adult programs at Hanley Center, and his expertise includes being the program director of both programs, as well as director of spirituality and clinical director. He holds advanced degrees but is best known as a dynamic presenter who draws his audience into the conversation. He was a plenary speaker at the 2017 Aging Life Care Association Annual Conference, exploring the issues of ethics as they relate to treatment of substance use disorder among aging Americans. Dr. Dyben demonstrates that the effective and humane treatment of chronic pain does not have to be opioid based and will demonstrate this from his clinical experience and academic knowledge.
