ALCA CE Webinar: Jewish (and Multifaith) Perspectives on Medical Aid in Dying

Wednesday, May 6, 2026 - Arielle Friedtanzer

Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) is a complicated and controversial issue in modern-day politics in and of itself, no less so when explored through a religious lens. Furthermore, when juxtaposed with Palliative Care, end-of-life decision-making becomes infinitely more nuanced as the two interventions might be presumed to conflict with one another.
Presented by Arielle Friedtanzer, in this session she unravels some of the complexities of MAID as it relates to Palliative Care, euthanasia, withdrawal of treatment, and Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking (VSED). Based on original research, this session offers present-day perspectives of Jews from varying denominations toward MAID, and explores how those attitudes impact their end-of-life decision-making. We explore ancient Jewish texts to determine whether we perceive them to be supportive or restrictive of MAID, offering insight into ancient rabbinic wisdom while applying it to a modern medical intervention, and touch on the perspectives that other major religions hold toward MAID, as well.

Learning Objectives

  • Attendees will understand the legal parameters of Medical Aid in Dying as it is written in the United States, including differences between states where it has become legal.
  • Attendees will be able to articulate several of the ethical issues that arise in offering, restricting, implementing, and utilizing MAID through interactive simulation.
  • Attendees will have a broad sense of religious perspectives on the issue, grounded in ancient text and present-day opinion.

Life Insurance Settlements – Benefitting Your Client…and You!

January 29, 2020 - Lisa Rehburg

Many clients are looking for additional sources to fund their health care and long-term care needs. One asset that most people don’t consider is their life insurance policy. 500,000 seniors a year lapse their life insurance policies, walking away with little or nothing. Why? They no longer want or need the policy, and don’t know there is another option. Through a life insurance settlement, a client can sell their unwanted policy for a lump sum of cash. This cash can be used to pay for their care needs.

Goal: Introduce the audience to what a life insurance settlement is and how it can be useful as a funding source for clients’ care. We bring the audience through all aspects of life insurance settlements from their history and regulation to the types of clients where they work best through to how much a policy can be worth.

This can be the difference between a crisis that is controlled and one that threatens a company’s reputation, morale, marketing and sales efforts and, ultimately, its bottom line.

Just as you urge your clients to proactively develop an aging plan for their relative, aging care professionals should also develop a crisis plan that can mitigate any business interruption or damage to their reputation with a crisis communications plan.
